General Scope of Project
In 2015, University Orthopedics and Michael Integlia & Company engaged the services of n|e|m|d architects, inc. to consolidate their various Southern New England offices into one new signature building, located on waterfront property in East Providence, Rhode Island. University Orthopedics envisioned a contemporary and cutting-edge building, reflecting the practice’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of medical technology. To accomplish this, n|e|m|d designed an innovative, four-story, 88,000 SF steel-framed building that is clad with a metal/composite panel rain screen. Large areas of glass visually reinforce the vertical circulation elements of the building and allow ample transmission of natural light into its core. The second floor is devoted entirely to orthopaedic surgery, housing six operating rooms and three procedure rooms while the fourth floor contains a rehabilitation gym and therapy space serving high school, college, and professional athletes. Kettle Point offers prominent views of the Providence River and Watchemoket Cove and is part of the East Providence waterfront revitalization.
The program included n|e|m|d teaming up with end user groups in each department to identify their current and future needs. The facility will house administrative offices, waiting areas, treatment centers, and associated support staff areas. Specialty pods include: urgent care, spine, joint, foot/ankle, sports/shoulder, hand, and pediatric. Imaging suites include 8 X-rays and MRI.
