General Scope of Project

n|e|m|d has always prioritized community involvement, and the Boys and Girls Club of Providence is no exception. In 2018, n|e|m|d began an extensive study of the Wanskuck Clubhouse building in Providence. The Boys and Girls Club program moved into the building in 1927, and though many renovations and updates have taken place over the years, it was in need of a refresh and a reorganization to better operate and serve the children of the Providence community today. After an extensive field verification study by our team, a complete programming exercise took place for all four floors with the goal of creating a more efficient flow and to create designated areas for certain age groups and activities.

Our schematic design proposes the following improvements to each floor. The ground level includes a computer lab, infirmary, the existing gym and locker rooms, a complete and brand new training kitchen, workshops, and a study area. The first level includes a game room, an area for staff offices, a learning center, a childcare center, and the existing pool. The second level includes additional space for staff, a tween area, dance studio, and a music center with a mixing room and recording studio. The third level provides space for the teens, as well as access to a rooftop deck with gathering space and garden beds.

The exterior of the building was also considered in this redesign. Major improvements to the parking lot entrance were proposed, as well as a more efficient and aesthetic main entry.
